OSCLG Conference: Hotel and Travel

Conference Hotels

Many thanks to the managers and staff at both of the conference hotels: the Magnuson Franklin Square Inn in downtown Houghton and the Baraga Lakeside Inn in Baraga.

Our hospitality rooms in both hotels were open every evening for the traditional President’s Wine and Chocolate socials. The hospitality room at the Franklin Square was open for yoga and breakfast on Sunday morning as the last conference attendees were departing.

Conference Shuttles

Thanks to the MTU Department of Humanities sponsorship, a free shuttle service was provided between the Franklin Square Inn, the Baraga Lakeside Inn, and the MTU campus. The shuttle ran at regular intervals every day of the conference. Our sincere thanks to the professional drivers from R&A Transportation, Houghton.

Thanks to beautiful fall weather, many attendees chose to walk between the MTU Memorial Union and the Magnusen Franklin Square. Several “discovered” the walking/biking trail maintained by the City of Houghton between campus and downtown Houghton.

Most conference attendees arrived and departed through the local Hancock airport (CMX), serviced by United Airlines with jet airline flights twice a day in and out of the Houghton/Hancock area. All flights into the Hancock airport fly directly from and to Chicago O’Hare. Free airport shuttles were provided.

A few attendees traveled through Sawyer International Airport Marquette (MQT). Some of these intrepid attendees stayed overnight in Marquette either coming or going.
