8:00 p.m. sin nombreSin Nombre (Cary joji Fukunaga, 2009)

This award-winning film tells the story of Sayra, a young Honduran woman, and Casper, a gang member, who meet on a dangerous train journey through Mexico to the U.S. Director Cary Fukunaga won a 2009 Sundance Best Directing award and cinematographer Adriano Goldman was awarded Sundance's Excellence in Cinematography and was named one of Variety's "10 Cinematographers" to watch.

festival notes: new faces

Saturday's film festival programming pays tribute to up-and-coming filmmakers and their work. Cary Joji FukunagaCary Joji Fukunaga was a Student Academy Award winner in 2005 and this year we are pleased to present his recent award-winning feature, Sin Nombre (see Saturday, 8 p.m.). We are also screening a narrative short, "Into the Woods," by our recent Communication and Culture Studies graduate Daena Makela (Saturday, 3 p.m.). Daena has been working as an intern with documentary filmmaker and Houghton native Heather Courtney.
