Food Swapping Your Way to Loosing Weight

Eat This, Not That! No-Diet Diet,” written by David Zinczenko, Editor in Chief of Men’s Health, and Matt Goulding, New York Times best selling author, is a food swapping guide for grocery shopping and dining out. The book is well organized to educate people how to make healthy food choices by revealing total calories and added sugars in favorite foods. Men’s Health.com features some of the book’s content. The “Eat this, not that,” section of the book is shocking to say the least. For example, if you go to Applebees, it’s smarter to order the 9-oz House Sirloin Steak (310 calories) than to order the Slow Simmered Tender Beef Sandwich with Fries (1,380 calories). The book also offers recipes for grocery items.

The authors spend a lot of time explaining to their readers that this is not your typical diet plan, it’s a guide to make you aware of calories and added sugars in your favorite foods. In the book’s acknowledgments Zinczenko and Goulding say, “Diet has become corrupted to the point where it now means a short term, unhappy, restrictive, and utterly futile way of eating.” The goal of the book is not to scare people with the word DIET, it’s meant to educate people on healthier alternatives.

I think one of the main reasons this book series is successful is because people are attracted to quick ways to lose weight. There’s slim to none exercising required, all you need to do is make smart eating choices. The website offers articles such as “8 Perfect Fitness Foods,” and “8 Foods You Should Eat Everyday.”

The website offers premium content to life-style changing information from the best selling books, plus online only content. The only catch is that you have to sign up for this content. The book is nice to have because you can bring it with you when you go shopping or dine out. In terms of publishing, I enjoy the book over the website. The colors, font styles, shapes, and overall layout is fun and visually appealing.

As nutrition regulations change and modify over time, the book will have to be revised as well in order to accommodate to the nutrition changes.  Last week, the FDA announced that they are doing a “makeover of nutrition labels,” making calories easier to navigate, and revealing added sugars too. This will be the first time in 20 years that nutrition labels have been modified. I think this will change the way people buy and eat food. Perhaps the “Eat This, Not That,” series won’t be a New York best-seller anymore.
